The Lactation Foundation opened in October 2010. It is a joint effort between the state of Texas WIC Program and the local WIC agency operated through the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston (UTHealth).

The primary purpose of The Lactation Foundation (LF) is to provide breastfeeding support for Texas WIC mothers and their infants. The Texas WIC Program boasts a breastfeeding initiation rate of 76% among our mothers who give birth while eligible for the program. However, exclusivity and duration rates are well below the government established Healthy People 2010 goals.

Many mothers discontinue breastfeeding due to incorrect information and lack of qualified support. The Foundation’s mission is to improve that situation by providing clinical expertise to help mothers who may be having difficulty and offer education and support to enable mothers to reach their breastfeeding goals. Our certified Lactation Consultants and support staff are well trained and can offer their knowledge through years of experience assisting mothers and babies with a wide variety of issues and concerns.

The secondary purpose of The Lactation Foundation is to provide a foundation of knowledge to health care professionals and the community. To that end we serve as a clinical training facility for WIC staff and other health care professionals. At The Lactation Foundation they can practice and acquire new skills in breastfeeding management that they can then use in their everyday interaction with mothers. The Foundation will also provide support to the community and other health care disciplines by acting as an information resource for current knowledge in the area of breastfeeding management.

The community will be able to access our resources through our web site, follow us on Facebook, dial our 1-800 warm line (1-877-550-5008) which will be answered during limited after-hours and in the near future we will offer web cam consultation to clients unable to travel to our location.
